The Problem
The prevailing medical advice in Moldova with regard to babies born with disabilities is to “place them in an institution and try again”.
In such institutions children are left with minimal supervision and very little stimulation. They often do not live into adulthood and the poorly funded institutions designed to care for them all too frequently end up damaging to their development.
When a mother makes the decision to keep her child, no support services are offered to her and she often lives in abject poverty. Homelessness, suicide, prostitution, and criminal activities are common side affects of poverty in Moldova as desperate people do whatever it takes to survive.
