Moldova

The Republic of Moldova is located in south-east Europe between Romania and Ukraine. It is a fertile, agricultural land, with a wonderful wine industry, little known outside the region. Historically it was part of Romania and, more recently, was the most south-westerly state in the USSR. It has been an independent parliamentary democracy since 1991.

Moldova has a population of 4.3 million, who see themselves very much as Europeans. But Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, and its population has suffered terribly from the country's economic collapse, with many families broken up, as breadwinners are forced to leave the country in search of a living.
